MCI first in U.S. to install Nortel's new Millennium
MultiApplication Terminal

WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 16 /PRNewswire/ - MCI today announced that it has
installed Nortel's (Northern Telecom's) Millennium MultiPay terminals and
MultiApplication phones with large graphical displays throughout the new MCI
Center in downtown Washington, D.C. By deploying the Nortel Millennium phones,
MCI is bringing advanced public communications access technology to the
state-of-the-art sports and events facility, which opened on December 2, 1997.
MCI Center is one of the world's most technologically advanced sports and
entertainment venues. The home of the NBA's Washington Wizards and the NHL's
Washington Capitals, MCI Center also provides a showplace for cultural,
political and entertainment events, as well as major college sports. More than
60 Millennium terminals have been installed throughout MCI Center, helping
usher in the dawn of a new era in sports and entertainment in the nation's
capital.
''As with all aspects of the MCI Center, guests will find that Nortel's
state-of-the art payphones will provide the most advanced features available
today,'' said Mike Cachine, MCI director of Corporate Information, Technology
and Services. ''Millennium terminals will allow fans and event attendees
access to the powerful services available on MCI's global network - such as
the Internet, e-mail, and information services. It will be a true home-court
advantage for MCI and all our visitors.''
The Millennium phones deployed by MCI are part of an advanced public
communications access system that will offer new choices and unprecedented
convenience to visitors. The MultiPay phones are equipped with an RJ-11 data
jack which enables users to connect a laptop computer to access powerful
network services such as electronic mail, the Internet, or information
services.
Nortel's new Millennium MultiApplication terminal with large graphical
display boasts an 8-line by 20-character easy-to-read display with graphics
capabilities. With all the functionality of traditional Millennium phones,
this terminal features a large display screen that will provide valuable
information regarding MCI Center events and announcements, as well as
information on MCI's products and services.
''MCI Center is the most technologically advanced sports/entertainment
facility in the world,'' said Abe Pollin, chairman, Washington Sports and
Entertainment. ''MCI has been largely responsible for contributing to the
high-tech success of MCI Center. The new Millennium phones are yet another
example of their dedication to bring the best to this facility.''
Nortel's Millennium phones also feature quick access keys, which perform
like speed dial keys, that can be programmed for one-touch dialing of
information services, emergency assistance, transportation services, public
service announcements or direct access advertising. Additionally, the phones
installed at MCI Center accept multiple payment methods--coin, calling card,
and credit cards--providing more choices and convenience to callers.
Currently, there are more than 135,000 Millennium phones deployed
throughout North America. Information about Millennium phones, other Nortel
products and authorized providers is available from 1-800-4NORTEL
