Still waiting for results of the periodontal study...

Last night on the CBS Evening News, Bernadette Healy (former NIH director) discussed the latest research showing a link between periodontal disease-associated bacteria and heart disease. This research was performed by Dr. Mark Herzberg (a biochemist and periodontist) and was presented yesterday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Herzberg has been studying the link between oral bacteria, tooth and gum disease, and heart disease for the past 10 years. A number of other researchers are also involved in this area. Here's a very brief Medline sample:

Effects of oral flora on platelets: possible consequences in
cardiovascular disease.

J Periodontol. 1996 Oct; 67(10 Suppl): 1138-1142.

platelets by members of the Streptococcus sanguis group.
Manning JE, et al.
J Med Microbiol. 1994 Jul; 41(1): 10-13.
