From what I understand reading Wikipedia, our auto makers tried to kill the electric car again in 2008.
Electric cars in 2008 couldn't get more than 55 miles of range. No one wanted that.

It took a long time before Tesla demonstrated that electric cars could be viable for the mass market. Even that took some "creative accounting" and some clever use of government subsidies on the part of Elon Musk before Tesla could become a self-sustaining profitable company.

Now we see California and other "woke" politicians trying to mandate all-electric vehicles, even though only all-electric passenger cars have been proven to be viable.

Moreover, we see auto makers trying desperately to transition to electric vehicles at the request of federal and state politicians, only to scale back because customer demand just isn't there.

Again, the free market is working as intended, no matter what the socialist left does.
