Executive hide-and-seek continues at Microsoft. The word out of Redmond is that Dave Cutler, the chief NT architect, just returned from a six-month leave of absence. Interesting timing, considering Microsoft engineers have been furiously working on NT 5.0 to the sounds of the "We're betting the company on it" mantra. Cutler, who used to scour every piece of NT code for errors or sloppy writing, now seems to be taking a much more hands-off approach.

Think he stopped off at DEC to steal some more code? Or were things just too quit up in Redmond with only Joachim Kempin around to play the heavy? It does seem odd that the whole "bet the company" thing followed by the indefinite slip took place in Cutler's absense. Will he make it through all 30megalines in time for the release? Who knows?

Cheers, Dan.
