I think the Zacks ratings are mechanically derived. And the most important ingredients to the formula are earnings surprises and altered estimates from analysts. Ligand qualifies with its smaller then expected losses and rising earnings estimates for 1999. I think the recent share price movement goes into the rating too.

Henry, I don't have anymore to contribute than what has already been provided on this ratings topic by you and others. I'm looking for a way to quickly access Zacks ratings (on the 1 to 5 scale) on any given company. I have three biotechs in my portfolio but only LGND carries the 1 rating. I agree that Ligand's improved ranking by Zacks proprietary system was largely the result of analyst's upward revisions of future earnings estimates.
