The vast majority of viruses mutate over time. Some don't. Or very very little mutation over time. Such as small pox. en.wikipedia.org

Very little drift.

That's why we have to take annual flu vaccines.

Covid -19 falls in that same family.

That's why you need boosters.

Herd immunity only works if you live in a very small population isolated from the rest of the world.

Even better....

If you lived on an island by yourself without any outside contact without any possible vector you would never get infected and wouldn't need to be vaccinated.
