Yes, in 1860 when the Republican party was composed of northern liberal free states and the Democratic party composed of Southern slave states. That reversed around the turn of the last century .... It's misleading to say the northern states were liberal. Also you should specify which century you're talking about. 1900 or 2000. Maybe you meant 2000. TX for instance has only been run by Republicans since about 1995, the year Bush became governor. Though Bush governed with Democrats in control of the TX legislature. Republican control of the TX leg. is even more recent.. ===================================
