Sullivan gives no timeline on US desire for shift in Israel’s operations in Gaza

The US national security adviser tells Israel’s Channel 12 that his conversation with Netanyahu did focus on when Israel would shift from the current “high-intensity” phase to a more precise one.

However, he refused to give details on how long that would take and whether Israel agreed beyond saying that the discussion was “constructive” and that there was “a wide degree of convergence”.

Sullivan said he expected Israel to continue its military operation against Hamas for some time but, with regards to Lebanon, expected there to be a negotiated settlement with Hezbollah.

He added that the Palestinian Authority should ultimately govern both the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip but said the PA would be “revamped and revitalised”. Netanyahu has rejected calls for the PA to return to Gaza.

Let me reiterate, you have our blessing

Pentagon chief to travel to the Middle East on Saturday

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will travel to Bahrain, Qatar and Israel, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder says.

Amid a rise in attacks against US forces in the region as well as against vessels in the Red Sea and other waterways, Ryder said the Pentagon chief plans to visit Bahrain to discuss the Gulf nation’s “important role” in regional security, “especially for maritime operations”.

In Qatar, Austin will meet the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Qatari minister of defence to reaffirm the countries’ security partnership and “to express his gratitude for Qatar’s efforts to facilitate the release of hostages from Hamas”.

Austin will also meet Netanyahu and Gallant in Israel to stress continued American support for the country, “reinforce the importance of taking civilian safety into account during operations” and express the need to boost aid deliveries to Gaza, Ryder said.

Gantz: US ‘not trying to dictate’ war policy to Israel

Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has told reporters that his country and the US are holding strategic, professional talks on Israel’s war on Gaza and that the US is not trying to control the course of events.

“We are sitting as two partners who see together in a responsible manner the broader picture,” he said.

Gantz did not mention Netanyahu by name, but some have interpreted his comments as criticism of the prime minister, after opposition politician Yair Lapid made a similar remark towards Netanyahu on Wednesday.

Many Israelis see Gantz, himself an opposition politician until joining the emergency government after October 7, as an alternative to Netanyahu as PM, and he has come out on top in a number of recent polls.
