>>The point is, Sony is coming. Iomega is justifiably worried, and Iomaniacs who blissfully sing the praises of Zip while staring upwards in the coming rainstorm will drown.<< Rocky - I was thinking about this post, and decided to respond to this part also. You seem to believe that virtually everyone on this thread with the exception of you is an idiot. I submit that if and when Sony HiFD ships and if and when it starts making progress in replacing the Zip as the high-capacity floppy standard, most of the people who participate here will be able to see it happening. Before we decide that the "Iomaniacs" are just blind to a huge threat, let's review a couple of historical points. In June of 96, I believe, announcements were made about LS-120. Bears predicted that this was the end for Zip. Bulls discussed the issue and mostly determined that the LS-120 was not a big threat. (One of the things we discussed, Ken, was how the LS-120 did have an advantage in the notebook area. We realized that way back then.) Now, a year and a half later, something like 9 million additional Zips have sold. LS-120 drives have been sold, and they have been doing a bit better lately, but their numbers don't come close to Zip's. Also in the summer of '96, there were announcements from Swan and Mitsumi about their new superfloppy. Again, the bears predicted doom for Zip, and the bulls decided it wasn't a real threat. Those drives have never shipped. Now we're hearing about HiFD. Once again, you and other bears are telling the bulls that we ignore it at our peril. I say we are not ignoring it. We are keeping a close eye on it. HiFD, since it has not yet shipped and no OEM's have announced support for it, is not yet a real threat to Zip sales. Ben has proposed that Sony might launch a huge pre-shipment ad campaign a la Microsoft, to prevent people from buying Zips. But that hasn't happened yet, either. Again, most of the people on this thread are smart enough to understand the potential threat that HiFD represents. However, you are making a lot of assumptions when you state that it IS coming and it WILL be the death of the Zip. When investing, one always has to make some assumptions. You make yours, and I'll make mine. Is that OK with you, Aristotle? - Allen
