Exactly the person I've been wanting to ask this question: How efficient is a coil spring for energy storage?

I've been tossing an idea around in my head for a long time that involves storing energy in a flywheel and having the flywheel mete out that energy at its own pace to a coil spring (solving the problem of getting energy off of that flywheel? -- I've struggled with the flywheel-to-wheels problem for quite a while) then using the spring's energy to assist in driving the wheels at an extremely high ratio. A ratio high enough that it takes a mile or more to get all the energy out of the spring, using it as an assist rather than as the primary driving force.

At face value, I would think that nearly all of the energy put into a coil spring could later be retrieved from it.

Same with lifing weights and allowing gravity to lower them, but I have no idea whether such an arrangement could possibly overcome the penalty of dragging all the weight around.
