You can either build community or you can tear it down. I've done both, and I decided I prefer a community of like minded people more than I like fighting with assholes- or with people with whom I have a fundamental human rights disagreement. I don't find it enjoyable to fight any more- I think I'm just too happy (it's probably all the cheese I eat), and I don't like to be around people whose morality disgusts me, because it's too much effort to talk to them around the edges of our disagreements. I think the prolific posters, especially the ones who fight, are probably deeply unhappy- and they're offloading their aggression and anger on the net. I get that. When my kids were small I never took my frustration out on them, never raised a hand to them, but I did argue with idiots on SI :-) But I'm so glad I don't feel the need any more. And I feel sorry for people who will clearly never outgrow the need. When I almost died in my 40's I realized that I didn't want to spend my life doing anything I'd regret at my death- and every second since that moment I've kept that in mind. Arguing with assholes at this point I would definitely regret. I don't want to waste a second of the life left to me. I'm so grateful for my life and the people in it. The good people on this thread and View are a big part of that. If you aren't on the backup Facebook group for SI which I started ages ago, and you'd like to be, message me and I will hook you up :-)
