Here is a little more about India, Ku vs. C-band, and pricing. Also, a handy chart telling who is doing whatover India. Whatever the reactions, the fact remains that satellite channels all over the world are moving in the same direction. A look at the listing of digitally compressed satellite channels available over India confirms this. While, until a year back, one could hardly come across any relevant channel that was digitally compressed, the listing shows over 60 such channels. Most of the corporates planning the launch of new channels, are planning a digital launch. But why this sudden move in this direction ? "Look at costs," says one of them, and cites figures to prove his statement. A normal analog transponder, C-Band, on any prominent satellite may set back the channel by anywhere between US dollars One to two million per year. However, a digitally compressed channel is likely to enable sharing of this amount between upto 5 channels, and still have left over capacity for audio or telecom. This brings transponder cost down to more acceptable figures. The rental or lease of satellite transponders is no doubt, one of the major expenses in any satellite channels expense statement. A digital transponder is likely to bring this bill down to more acceptable levels of anywhere between US $ 100,000 to about US $150,000. This makes it possible for more niche channels to be launched, since now the total cost of launching such a channel is less. Another side of the digital story is the availability of transponders. Over the past few years, C-band capacities on satellites were difficult to come by over India. The last year has seen a few new satellites being launched, whereby the transponder market has converted from a sellers market to a buyers market. Some of the prominent new satellites beaming into India are the Thaicom 3, Intelsat 704, Apstar 2R, Palapa C2, Arabsat, etc, along with Measat which has a Ku-band beam focused on India.
