Easier to just believe stuff than think about it.

I will assume you are referring to a biblical notion of Satan. A while back I started listening to talks by Bart Ehrman who has written many books on the New Testament. He was a born-again Christian but after finding many mistakes in the NT and questioning the suffering in the world, he became an atheist. He is currently a professor of Religious Studies at the UNC at Chapel Hill.

Here is a 10-year old video with about 2m views: youtube.com

Francesca Stavrakopoulou is a professor of the Hebrew Bible and Ancient Religion at the University of Exeter. She claims the OT was modified to become more monotheistic around the 6th century BCE. She has a three-part BBC series The Bible's Buried Secrets which I found interesting.

Mauro Biglino is a author and was a translator for the Vatican. He has many well-argued positions about mis-translations of the OT which create a new narrative and overlap with Prof Stavrakopoulou's ideas.

These three scholars work hard to get people to rethink the OT and NT, and not just believe what they have been told.

We are stepping into the modern thinking based on science, but too many don't see the need.

There has been huge technical progress in the US and I attribute this to good schools and sufficient financing of ideas. Sadly, there are too many people without a good education or good prospects, and become Trump supporters. <g>
