I learned a lot watching 'Quest for Fire'. Such as, if you take the limbs off an animal you're eating one at a time, cauterize the wound so it lives, the meat stays fresh without refrigeration. When all that's left is the torso, you have a feast. In the movie, the cannibal tribe did that with people.

There are hunter gatherer societies in So America and South Africa (Bushmen) - where are their slaves?

I always thought the same thing. Historians usually use about 12,000 years, but I push it out to 15,000 years, but it could be further back.

Tribes before that time still took slaves.

Raiding parties were common with indigenous people all over the world for as far back as we can figure out and slavery was not the only common behavior, so was cannibalism.

I remember a story about tribes in New Guinea as told by a school teacher who was born and raised there. He said the day before a raiding party was like Christmas he was so excited he could barely sleep.

And Genghis Khan said (paraphrased): "a beautiful day is when we would raid a village, rape the women and take the gold."

And for brutality we need to remember the torture both major religions engaged in for hundreds of years like stoning women and using the rack.

Humans were very cruel until just a few years ago really when we discovered civil rights less than a 100 years ago.

<< It wouldn't be a huge surprise to find out those dates could be pushed back a lot further.>
