<< 'own' the GUI of the future.>>

fnews.yahoo.com

Three years ago when they were conjuring up what we call today the "network computer" they envisioned something they simply called "The Box"

The concept of The Box was a processor as slow as a 386 with high speed cable modems, a small-powerful-browser/GUI/OS and enough RAM to run applications. No need for a hard drive.

The selling point was that it didn't matter the manufacturer of The Box because the browser software would level the playing field for all. Something made by SUN or Netscape (this was before MSFT jumped into the Internet "The internet is just a passing fad, it'll be over in a year" said Bill Gates) fueled by Java.

With the browser in place, the only question a buyer would have had was? What color is your box? In 1995 Apple still outsold all of the computer manufacturers in volume of hardware.

I think the concept of the box has changed. This link you gave us shows the importance of "what's in the box?"

Microsoft made war with Netscape because it feared irrelevance when Netscape Galaxy came online "reducing windows to an icon on the desktop".

So far Galaxy is still vapor. Is there still a GUI of the future to be made?
