Re: Canadian Oil Companies

I sold a few SU and started a position in CNQ late last year. I like their operation and it is much cleaner than how SU process oil sands. Still my largest holding in my portfolio is CVX by over 10x

I agree XOM is the highest quality name value play overall for a major with YPF as a wild card given as I prefer the Vaca Muerta over the Permian given it is at similar quality and has more drilling inventory remaining but I don't like the depletion rates of shale at all.

Personally I prefer smaller caps of conventionally produced fields either onshore or shallow offshore where the depletion rates are 1-3% that is where I made a big portion of my success in the sector and under conditions when the price of oil is below its cost to produce. For one we are not in an environment for huge gains given the companies are profitable unless you can find a special situation of a smaller cap with major high quality production growth or something affected by political risk.

For one I would closely monitor LT debt free Gulf Keystone on the London which has the best quality oil field for a small cap for any positive developments of its political quagmire. It paid a dividend equivalent to 65% of its current market cap in 2022 and briefly got down to 100% last year.
