CellularVision CEO: Co. Won't Take Part In License Auction

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--CellularVision USA Inc. (CVUS) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Shant Hovnanian said the company will not participate in the federal government's auction of high-speed data connection licenses scheduled for Wednesday.

The auction will sell licenses for local multipoint distribution systems, or LMDS, which are used for high-speed data connections like internet access and cable television.

In an interview with CNBC Tuesday, Hovnanian said CellularVision, which invented the technology, has the only license to provide the technology in New York City.

Hovnanian described the license as the most lucrative in the world, and said CellularVision's capacity in New York will help it to continue its leadership in the industry.

The company believes that it has "plenty of room" for growth within its current territory, Hovnanian said.

The executive said that on a national level, the company plans to grow through the creation of alliances with the larger companies that are becoming involved in LMDS.

CNBC said the Federal Communications Commission plans to auction two LMDS licenses for each of the 493 identified U.S. markets.
