With the first generation BEV's battery conditioning was not available. There was no way to heat the battery pack or cool it on hot days. The first generation Nissan Leaf was a prime example of the problem and that gave BEV's a bad reputation to the general public.

Virtually all BEV's have preconditioning capabilities today. It takes very, very little energy to do that.

Newer cell chemistries will allow much better efficiency at much lower temps.

Today waste heat from the inverter and electric motor recirculate thru the battery pack helping keeping it at optimum temps in cold wx.

Today's BEV inverters are close to 99% efficient and motors well over 90%.
