I do live somewhere in the deep interior of AK. Our normal coldest part of the winter is middle of Jan., typical high about 0, typical low about - 15. Prior to this last cold snap in the L48 we had a brief cold snap, then it warmed up a bit, now we're heading into the deep freeze. Going to last about 10 days, into end of month, current forecast. Not as strong/long as they come, but decent. Really long ones last a month or so. Lows in the valleys will hit 40 below and colder. Daily highs, only 30 below in the midst of it. What happens up here usually heads south, how far south and extent of spread into the L48 depends on jet stream positioning. But normally a strong polar vortex pushes south quite a ways. It is never the same from year to year, for sure, we can stay pretty darn cold into end of Feb. Not a cheechako, been up here a good long spell. Not a global warming advocate either, agnostic. It is the weather. We did have a long stretch of warmer winters, starting early 2000. Glaciers everywhere receded. Then about 5/6 yrs ago, the beginning of normal to colder than normal winters seems to be the case. From what I have read it appears plausible our glaciers are growing again, maybe the Arctic Sea Ice is expanding again as well, but re the latter too early to say. Coldest ambient I have experienced has been 60 below. Coldest wind chill much colder. When it gets back to zero it feels like you can go out in bathing suit and stay warm. 40 below up here is not normal nor abnormal. 60 below is fairly rare. Colder than that is extremely rare. Old timers say 60 below used to be common in the 70's, when a lot of records were set. They exaggerate a little imo. So get cold, burn that gas. Tweets The - 80 record still exists. Spent a little time in the Prospect Creek Area, one of coldest areas in AK. uaf.edu climate.nasa.gov Next few years will tell the story here, imo. 2023 was above the 2020 low.
