That is indeed correct. Small investors lose.

Shorted shares created out of thin air must be sold to someone to create a profit, wouldn't you agree? The buy side transaction after conversion causes them to become real shares and shouldn't cause upward pressure because the conversion is the "buy". It's basically a replacement. The sale however is real. Thus, downward pressure.

But one of the beautiful things about the whole game is that us unenlightened folk are left to speculate.
