You're looking at Portugal? We had some cancellation nightmares last year. This year, we booked to Toronto, left a few days in Toronto and then booked to Portugal. Same thing on the way back. It was a breeze getting here. We used Air Portugal. Direct from Toronto to Lisbon. Could not have been easier. If the flights get delayed, so what. We'll still make our connection a few days later. (hopefully lol)

In EDIT:

Book direct with Air Portugal, Air Canada, WestJet, Lufthansa - etc. The price is usually the same (but you may have to look around a bit) but if there are problems the airlines will bend over backwards if you book through them. If through the booking site, it's the problem of the booking site and you're on your own.
