Dave, Syborg, This may have changed significantly since I was at Informix. At that time, it was felt that in many cases, IFMX would be able to provide equivalent/superior performance in OLTP area without the use of an external transaction monitor. If I understand correctly, a transaction monitor bundles actions, especially those involving distributed operations or very high transaction rates to reduce the CPU load. I had heard quotes like the one attributed to Stonebraker, but it had been long before any kind of object extensions were considered. I also remember reading that IFMX was one of the first committing to support of the MSFT Transaction Server. On the other hand, I understood the Universal Data Option is the data type extensibility and other capabilities derived from integrating the Illustra/Datablades technology into the base Informix engine. There may be some support/integration with transaction processors, but I remember that the third party products fell far short of desirable for what was then IUS (the old lowest common denominator problem). Here is the definition of Universal Data Option from last November's reorganization of the product lines: "4.The Universal Data OptionTM, formerly part of INFORMIX-Universal Server, uses DataBlade technology to extend the traditional relational database functionality of Informix Dynamic Server to incorporate new data types such as photos and maps, new industry-specific business logic such as package routing rules or complex currency exposure analysis. This option also allows customers to take advantage of new server functions and indexing methods for Web and content management."
