U S West Goes For Apps on ASND powered NWs
By JOHN T. MULQUEEN

U S West Communications will announce on
Tuesday that it is planing to roll out
network-based applications later this year,
including directory services, E-mail hosting,
multimedia intranets and quality of service
management.

John Charters, vice president of Internet services
for U S West !nterprises, said today that the
services will be offered first in the 14 states
served by U S West and rolled out later
nationally on networks supplied by Williams
Communications, Intermedia Communications [these two have been ASND's customers]
and another long distance carrier he would not name.
Intermedia will carry toll traffic within U S West's
service region, he said.

U S West is targeting all types of businesses
initially for the applications, and will later offer
them to residential customers, he said.

Microsoft, Sun Microsystems and Oracle are
working with U S West to develop and deploy
NT, Java and Unix based applications on the
carrier's network, Charters said. Novell and U S
West will offer a directory-enabled network to
manage the applications to provide directory,
domain name server, proxy caching, secure
Internet and remote intranet access through a
single login.

Hewlett-Packard and its recently acquired
VeriFone unit are helping U S West create IP
management systems, including quality of service
management features. Digital Equipment is
helping U S West support customers' back-office
applications, and to integrate proprietary
networks with U S West's national IP network.

Charters said that the applications will be housed
on NT and Unix servers and on remote switches.
Some of the applications will run off centrally
located servers, others will be on distributed
platforms, such as caching, or on remote
switches, he said.

U S West !nterprises, the data networking arm of
U S West, has been offering frame relay services
nationally since 1995.

56kbps Modems to Take Center Stage in Late '98
February 19, 1998 (TAIPEI) -- CIS Technology Inc. and Asia Sun (Taiwan) Inc., the two
largest modem makers in Taiwan, said 56kbps modems will become the mainstream
products in the modem market in the second half of 1998.
CIS Technology announced an annual output target of 6 million units for 1998, and Asia Sun,
4.8 million units.

In 1997, CIS Technology manufactured 4 million modems, making it the largest modem
producer in the world. The company currently enjoys a 10 percent share of the global market,
and the new annual target of 6 million units is expected to help boost this figure to 12
percent in 1998.

The 56kbps model now accounts for one-half of the company's total modem output.

Asia Sun expects to increase its annual output from 4.7 million to 4.8 million units in 1998.
The company plans to launch a new 56kbps modem at the Hannover Computer Expo in
March, and it expects to receive NT$300 million (US$9 million) to NT$500 million worth of
orders for cable modems in 1998.

New products such as the double modem, which requires two telephone lines, are currently
under development, according to the company.
