I heard an advisor talk about when he first met Musk as a Paypal alumni. He told Musk, before I advise you how invest or spend your money, why don't think about what it is that you really want and then come for a talk. Musk took a week and then told him, what I really want is to help humanity colonize the space. As the advisor puts it, he almost fell off his chair and thought that was crazy. So he told Musk, I'm sorry, I cannot help with that. At that time only the US and Russia had sent a man to space. The same advisor recalls that Musk later told him, it's ok. I've thought about and colonizing space is a big project and much of it is beyond my skillset. But I know what I can do. I am an engineer and I can work on the part about sending rockets into the space. So Musk went on and started SpaceX. The advisor says that he regrets how badly he underestimated Musk and never took part in SpaceX. He was passionate enough about it that he managed to recruit some of the best engineers from NASA. I heard the engineers too. They said they were there because in NASA they felt like cogs in a wheel and at SpaceX they feel like they are the Right Bros. And he eventually made NASA outsource their rocket launches to him. Then and only then, did he go to start Tesla. His goal was twofold. One, to build an electric car and reduce emissions. And more importantly (to him), to have a source of wealth and income to back Space travel. So this idea that board would deny him his goal and get in the way or his dream would have been truly demotivating. The idiot judge thinks that because Musk had shares in Tesla, he would have worked his ass off for free to increase the price of his shares and get richer. But if wealth had been his goal, he would have never bet it all on SpaceX. Money is not the motivating factor everyone. Many people want something more out of life - especially once their basic needs are met.
