Steve Balmer kept Microsoft in the wilderness for about 13 years if memory serves, and the stock went nowhere while he was in charge. Once Nadella was announced as the new CEO, the stock began to recover and has shot up dramatically since.

I can't think if a bigger turnaround has ever occurred in American industrial history, for such an already large and dominant company, than what has happened at Microsoft in the last 10 plus years.

Apple's turnaround story is more dramatic, I think, but it was never in a dominant position like Microsoft was. Apple was very close to going out of business when Steve Jobs returned and righted the ship, the rest is history.
