how much advantage does the modern equipment provide?

We don't know.

But..... TSMC sells out it's most modern line widths well in advance of production, companies like QCOM and NVDA are the customers, and NVDA cannot make enough 3nm chips to satisfy demand.

So.....the real money (the buyers of the modern stuff) say the modern stuff is worth the outrageous premium prices charged by the chip makers and the chip equipment makers.

If it weren't true, NVDA's customers would buy 12nm graphics chips rather than 3nm graphics chips at 20x the cost of the equivalent 12nm chip.

Modern stuff sells, so it must give some meaningful advantage.
