I think you are underestimating the value of not cashing out his stock and running after he left MSFT. He basically did what good capitalists do and lent capital to the company by not crashing the stock price by cashing out. It is why capital gains are taxed at a lower rate as we risk the value vanishing if companies are mismanaged while we can't buy things with the money we have in stock. Also, if we are successful, we are hammered in the US with significantly higher taxes including higher payments to Medicare insurance and taxes on our Social Security benefits. IF we had spent it all and only got Social Security in retirement, we'd pay much less in taxes overall.
