<<"We have another couple of quarters" before the
supply-and-demand equation gets in balance," he said.>>
Amazing that the drive stocks take this kind of comment so well. Basically means that with the usual summer slowdown we have to wait for the December quarter before we can hop to see much improvement. Wish he would say what he sees restoring equilibrium with the Koreans adding capacity and IBM being aggressive.

Seagate (SEG-Hold-$24 1/2) 2/18/98
Investor Suitability: Growth
We believe yesterday's Quinta announcement properly positions SEG as a technology leader. If SEG can effectively bring the Quinta product to market, it then could recapture its lost marketshare on the high-end. We will be watching this space and expect others to follow. Quantum (QNTM-Hold-$26 3/16) with TeraStor is also expected to announce a near-field recording (NFR) device later this year. Additionally, Seagate did not furnish a timeline for Quinta's rollout. Furthermore, we have not adjusted our models, due to the uncertainty of the product schedule, which we would not expect to significantly impact either revenue or earnings for at least a full year. Quinta does have three clean rooms in San Jose, capable of making 300-500 drives per day, which would likely be more of a test-bed for eventual offshore production. We reiterate our Hold rating on SEG shares at this time due to component and manufacturing start-up costs, which we would expect to have an initial negative impact on earnings in Quinta's early stages.
