TDK Systems Announces Initial Details of a Customer-Focused V.90 Upgrade Program for Owners of TDK 56K ModemsTDK to Provide Tools that Enable Customers to Decide the Precise Timing of their Upgrade Based on the V.90 Adoption Schedule of their ISP or RAS Unlike x2 their ROK based products can't support both codes at the same time...thus the pricise timing requirement.NEVADA CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 18, 1998-- TDK Systems, Inc., the global leader in PC Card modems, announced today initial details regarding a customer-focused ITU-V.90 upgrade program for all existing owners of its 56K CyberExpress 5600 and GlobalClass 5660 PC Card modems. TDK specifically plans to provide customers with tools that enable them to decide the precise timing of their upgrade based on the particular V.90 adoption schedule implemented by their Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Remote Access Server (RAS). TDK has a V.90 implementation, and will have ITU-V.90 compliant code running in its laboratories in Nevada City, California, London, Dusseldorf, and Tokyo during the month of February. However, to ensure that its global, mobile computing customers continue to have convenient, reliable access to vital data communications functionality, TDK is committed to avoiding a premature release of the code. As such, TDK customers along with their ISPs, will need to be prepared to handle any technical problems that may result from early incompatibilities among independent V.90 implementations from multiple vendors. How many different K56Flex versions of the V.90 code are there...as opposed to x2 V.90 code versions? ''The ITU V.90 compatibility agreements are remarkable in that this worldwide process proceeded to this stage as quickly as it has,'' said John Huggins, President & CEO of TDK Systems, Inc. ''It truly is a refreshing testimony to the efforts of the international ITU delegates as well as major vendors including Rockwell, 3Com, Lucent and others, and is also an excellent start to what could be a great recovery from early customer confusion about 56K modems.'' TDK has initiated interoperability testing with other vendor solutions, as well as with central site modems. It should also be noted that the customer's central site must also have been upgraded in order to connect using the new ITU-V.90 mode. ''While the new V.90 standard is certainly a critically important development, we believe that its announcement is only the first step of the process of creating a truly universal standard,'' added John Huggins. ''To ensure that users have as transparent a transition to this new standard as possible, both modem and Internet equipment providers now owe it to their customers to make V.90 the end of the 56K confusion, rather than the start of another phase of commercial confusion, inter-operability problems and upgrade headaches. We believe the more responsible suppliers will delay their mass deployments despite commercial pressures to release, and that is why TDK Systems has adopted a flexible, customer-focused approach to the V.90 upgrade process''. V.90 upgrades are expected to be available from the TDK Web-site beginning sometime during the second quarter of 1998.
