Intel To Build $1.5B Ore. Wafer Fabrication Plant

HILLSBORO, Ore. (Dow Jones)--Intel Corp. (INTC) began construction
of its $1.5 billion 300-millimeter advanced logic wafer fabrication facility in
Hillsboro, Ore.

In a press release Wednesday, the silicon chip maker said it will develop
and manufacture computer chips on 12-inch silicon wafers at the plant,
which it expects to complete in 2000.

The new plant, part of a multiphase site development known as Ronler
Acres, will have a 120,000 square-foot Class 1 clean room.

The facility will be the future location of Intel's Portland Technology
Development operation, which develops the manufacturing recipes for Intel
chips.

Intel will develop technologies of the 0.13-micron generation at the plant,
which it plans to convert into a volume manufacturing factory.
