A player doesn't have to be short to be negative about a company. He might prefer a competitor. He might be waiting for the stock to climb higher so he can short it later. He might simply be irritated at what he perceives to be a bubble. He might want to annoy a few cheerleading posters.
And a promoter of a stock isn't necessarily long. He could just like the stock. Or, more disingenuously, he could be waiting to short at a higher price and is joining in the cheerleading to help give the stock a temporary boost.
And so what anyway? The issue is the company, its prospects, and how the two manifest themselves in the stock price. All the ad hominum arguments that go on here are juvenile irrelevancies. . . . Unless, of course, I want to personally attack someone and indulge my inner teen-ager, in which case I'll view that as maturely constructive
