Making a small effort to be a good, responsible citizen... translates to "smug" in your world.

Driving unsafely and rudely in an over powered, gas guzzling car is probably your dream of "the good life." Now THAT IS smug.

Because "saving the environment" has never been the primary selling point in a new car

Of course for most people it isn't.

I remember well my dad predicting we would see a practical, efficient BEV around the turn of the century way, way back in 1974 while I was working towards my BSEE at WSU.

As for dire warnings about the end of the world, yada yada yada, not many people are feeling that, except the wackos that go around defacing fine art under the guise of "Just Stop Oil."

Yeah, my opinion changed when I listened to a lecture Dr. Carl Sagan gave at the U of W here in Seattle way back in 1979, just before his release of the science series Cosmos on PBS.

I asked my dad about AGW and he smiled because he headed a science committee at Boeing way back in 1973 that studied the problem.

Boeing was worried about the consequences of burning increasing amounts of fossil fuels and resulting in increasing greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere and what that would do to the Earth and Boeing's business.
