As long as there are economical supplies of coal, and they can be anywhere in the world, China will be burning coal till it's all gone.

Unless things change.

Here is a nice "worldometer" on coals reserves and consumption.

About 133 years left before China turns off the Coal Power Stations.

I wonder how many metric tonnes of mercury that represents being chucked into the air and returning to the seas?

Looks like coal is about 0.275ppm mercury. 109 tons of mercury emitted by the USA alone. Per Year !
