Michael Allard:
Your point about the technology residing in the satellite versus gateways is old an worn out. Both I* and G* have already announced 2nd generation systems and are working on 3rd. They will both, for years to come, change over their satellites to new technologies.
The advantage of having the majority of your technology has never been proven beyond the vague statement that "it is an advantage". As a matter of fact, relying on gateways is a huge disadvantage for military use in that they are much more subject to sabotage.

Your statement about a "noticeable voice delay in the Iridium system" is completely wrong. Globalstar communications travel longer distances. First of all G* satellites are almost twice as high as I*. Secondly, G* communications bounce from gateway to satellite repeatedly until they reach a gateway near enough to the destination. I*, on the other hand, goes directly from satellite to satellite to destination.

Both systems have made a number of changes to their plan. This is nothing shocking with technology this new. I* still plans on $3,000 phones with a focus on business travellers. Because, for some time now, I* has planned on tying into land based lines there will be no difficulties with contacting persons inside of buildings.

In any case, with the demand that is now out there, both systems will be tremendously successful.
