for technical, historical and marketing reasons A/W developed Maya with a very strong Wavefront/Kinimation/Dynamation/TDI look and feel.the architecture is totally for large studio work, where TD's and in house programmers are present. the software is very powerful, but Alias users will find it quite unrefined, with a very perculiar workflow. i have spoken to about 20 Alias oriented beta users, and they all feel the same way. A/W stacked the deck by having 85% of the initial alpha and beta sites be Wavefront/TDI oriented companies. they totally underestimated the cultural and stylistic differences between Alias and Wavefront/TDI users. Maya2.0 featureset is almost closed, before A/W received general feedback. so it's Maya3.0 when all will be made elegant and sweet. btw; the performance is stunning, i can move a full nurbs human, shaded and lit in real time. and the API is full and rich, probably the best built in toolkit in the world. but no modeling til Maya2.0, and a serious bit of interface and workflow redesign is a must.
this is all my own opinion, arrived at after many sanity checks with my peers.
