Joachim,
All the OT stories got bigger in the telling, Jesus on the other hand existed in an age when documenting stories was common.
Jesus walked on water.

Jesus fed 5,000 people (not counting women and children) using five loaves and two fishes.

Jesus healed people and even raised the dead.

Jesus turned water into wine.

Jesus calmed a storm.

Most importantly, Jesus was crucified and came back from the dead himself.

All of these miracles were documented by at least four of Jesus' own disciples (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).

P.S. - J.R.R. Tolkien was a devout Christian. His works, including The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, is his own testament to his faith.
