The "op" part label reflected the physical location on the printed newspaper. The name change reflected that. Plus the new label is a useful descriptor of content. Frankly, I had forgotten the name change, not having discussed this in a while. Sorry if that was confusing.
Wasn't confusing to me. NYT made it clear that the name change was about getting rid of the "Opposite".

NYT created the "op-ed" which broadly referred to the opposing page, both literally and figuratively.
