President Jiang Stresses China's Electronics Industry February 18, 1998 (BEIJING) -? China's electronics industry is developing at an accelerating pace, said President Jiang Zemin, concurrently general secretary of the Communist Party of China. He made the remark during a visit to a digital industry exhibition sponsored by the Ministry of Electronics Industry.

Jiang added that China must place a priority on developing the electronics industry to meet new challenges, and he urged officials at all levels to study the information industry so as to help the country advance its modernization efforts. Also, he noted the importance of creativity in the field of technology.

China shouldn't rely on imported know-how and must expand its independent technological development, he said.

At the exhibition, Jiang expressed interest in new domestic products, including mobile telephones, audio-video products and a variety of information technologies.
