I have absolutely no information. Nothing but speculation. However, Wall Street dealmakers are notorious for leaking info about potential acquisitions before they happen. I suspect they do this for a variety of reasons ranging from ego (making themselves look important) to making a quick buck on the transaction, to encouraging other bidders to enter and bid the price up. If you read "Barbarians At the Gate", you'll learn that the investment bankers let the word out about a leveraged buyout which resulted in two more bidders entering the picture and jacking the price way up.

There may never have been discussions at all. On the other hand, there may have been discussions for some or all of Comsat which were spooked. In the latter case, they may or may not be revisited in the future.
