I have the definitive book on knots. An old American square rigger sailor wrote it in 1944.

The Ashley Book of Knots: Amazon.co.uk: Ashley, Clifford W.: 9780571096596: Books

In that he describes many of the old practices of sailboat rigging, and even describes the differences between the UK maritime practices and American practices.

Leo on Tally Ho had the good fortune to have a number of American craftsmen who have been trained and knowledgeable on those practices. It was great watching those old skills being put into practice for real. The woodworking skill set was phenomenal. Perhaps common once upon a time but rare today.

Leo was also trained in the old style wooden boat building techniques. When I saw him replace the keel I was just blown away at his high quality workmanship and the massive task he set himself. It was stupendous for one person to attempt. This was before he picked up the chainsaw again and started working on the ribs.
