Credit card skimmers were identified in nine different Boston area Roche Bros. locations over the course of two days last week, the company said on Tuesday. The company said the devices identified in eight locations last Wednesday, including Wellesley, Watertown, Bridgewater, Westwood, Natick, Downtown Crossing, Sudbury, and Needham Roche Bros. Two additional skimmers were discovered the following morning at the West Roxbury location, the company said. Roche Bros. said the first credit card skimmer was identified at the Wellesley store on last Wednesday. "In response, all stores were promptly notified of the potential threat, instigating heightened awareness and vigilance among store associates," the company said in a news release. "The company-wide notification led to the discovery of a skimming device at the Bridgewater store at 1:20 p.m.," the company said. "Security footage revealed that the device had been installed just three minutes prior, at 1:17 p.m." To date, Roche Bros. "The implementation of daily security inspections played a pivotal role in swiftly identifying the credit card skimmer in Wellesley," CEO Kevin Barner said. "Our proactive protocols, including the immediate dissemination of information to all stores, enabled the swift detection of skimming devices across multiple locations on the same day." Card skimmers found at 11 Big Y grocery stores in Massachusetts, company says Cybersecurity experts say it is a sophisticated operation. "Organized crime is usually behind it and they create 3D printed skimming devices designed to work for this particular chain or that chain and install these skimmers and wirelessly catch all that sensitive information," Robert Siciliano, cyber security speaker and author, said. He says the best way to protect yourself is to use a chip card and insert or tap it. "That chip is much harder to clone than a magnetic strip," Siciliano said. It's the latest attempt by thieves at Massachusetts grocery stores in recent months. Last December, Big Y said credit/debit card skimmers were discovered at 11 of its stores and that at least 10 of those devices were installed just days before Christmas. In December 2023, Roche Bros. Supermarkets announced that card skimmers were found at self-checkout lanes at the Sudbury Farms stores in Sudbury and Needham, the Brothers Marketplace store in Weston and the Roche Bros. stores in Wellesley and Natick.
