The way it's supposed to work is that, when you notice something that seems off or that you don't like, you look into it. If there's a simple, plausible explanation and you don't find plausible evidence to refute it, you accept that it's likely to be true pending new evidence.

That is the way it is supposed to work. Admittedly, that isn't always the case, but that is the ideal. However, with the rise of talk radio and the wingnut echo chamber, that has gone by the wayside. Far too many are content with accepting highly implausible things as reality. Now it is true that everyone is guilty of that at one time or another, but that entire industry has a business model that depends on keeping people ignorant, angry, paranoid and mis-informed. Turns out, it can be pretty lucrative for those with no moral compass and/or scruples.

Remember the 2016 election cycle when fake news became a thing? The purveyors of actual fake news quickly found that there is a wide swath of Americans who love the stuff, often copying and pasting stuff with no critical thought. Just as long as it fits with their chosen media. Most people might copy a paste something a few times, but sooner or later start to wonder if it is true. When they check into it and can't find support or see it debunked, they stop sharing it. But not out epic keyboard warriors. They often embellish those stories, conflate it with other things and often tack on flights of fancy. It is very discouraging.
