I would not deny ANYONE with a legitimate claim for asylum entry into the country. Never should that be denied. OTOH, that's not what we're talking about.

Just because someone mumbles "asylum" as they climb over the border fence does not imply they were in fact seeking asylum.

Escaping generally bad conditions in a country (e.g., Venezuela) is NOT automatically grounds for asylum.

There must have been a history of persecution in which a person has suffered in their home country based on one of a number of "protected grounds", and there must exist a "well-founded fear" -- a reasonable fear of future persecution if they returned to their country of origin.

And they're supposed to have to present evidence to support their claims.
