Looking at 2470

That is when these stones show up according to video. I took this photo from just a few hundred meters from where I am sitting now. Lots of them in this vicinity.

In these parts it's all granite. Very hard rock to make drawings on, but once made, lasts a long time.

" DATING ROCK ART
Dating rock art is very challenging. For a long time, it was thought that Scotland's prehistoric carvings were about 4000 years old, but recent research shows that they were probably made at least 5000 years ago in the Neolithic period

<< Cup & Ring stones >>

When I was looking at the Cup & Ring stones once again this morning, I might have twigged at the meaning of these symbols.

The possible explanation becomes clear when one considers the circumstances, The were very few human beings about, even in "civilization" areas. It was predominantly a human free empty brave new world.

Each cup and set of rings represent the birth of a human being. Either Male or Female. An important scarce resource at the time. Consider it the sex education class of the period. The number of rings around the male part of the path could represent time periods like years or decades, but I suspect represents the number of other human beings (generations) created. I suspect genealogy went through the mothers line at the time as it kept the record keeping more straightforward. Thus six rings could mean either a grandfather or grandmother who had two children that survived and they in turn both had two surviving children, thus six new people in all ! A most important record at the time, and something of an achievement. Make a picture of it as a celebration! -g-

Not many got to that number of rings though. In granite areas, the parents would sigh... oh no, not another ring I have to chip out.... it will take me days !!!
