up to a point. However, the deal, as I understand it, has been shaken hands upon.

I used to be a loan officer. It sounds like this is a "bank" deal, and my assumption is that there is an agreement. If I were Gaugs, and I were in any way concerned that something would change, the first thing I would do is get Mrs. Gaugs on the extension phone (without letting Dickhead know the ruse) and call Dick and go over the agreement, make notes, and thank him. Then, I would wait till a couple of days before closing, and call the most Senior Official I could on the phone, (the higher the better as long as I get through, which is easy if you say "I just wanted to say thank you"), introduce myself and thank him or her for the loan, mentioning Dickhead by name.

Then, if I were at the closing (business hours only) and something got "creative", I'd just stop (no arguments) and ask for the phone. I'd have a couple of names handy, but I'd try for Senior Official. It'd be OK if I got put on hold ("Yes, we spoke 2 days ago, I'll be happy to hold"). If I felt a little felonious, I could even fake the call if it got that far. Which it won't.
