Annual Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival

A visual spectacle, safety hazard and cultural event, Taunggyi's annual balloon festival attracted over 200,000 spectators this year.
From 5-12th December this year, the airspace of Taunggyi got really exciting as more than 400 hot air balloons were released during the annual festival of lights.

Apparently crashes & fails are common...

A life time ago, I was in Taunggyi, some where around 1964-65 but not to attend the festival.. For one reason or other, never been back.. And now the time has passed and Burma or Myanmar that I remember is no longer there and I don't feel incline to revisit..

Taunggyi, a hill station, is Famous for Pagodas and Inle Lake.. Ethnically, folks in Shan state, which covers almost 1/4 of Myanmar, are very different then your typical Burmese.. There was always a simmering tensiion between Shan State and the Govt. I doubt that has changed..
