For iPhones, Apple and the major Android manufacturers (usually Samsung) leapfrog each other with features and specs with each new release.

Also, specs like we're talking about only matter to the gearheads, the average consumer isn't going to notice a difference in performance between the best phones of both brands because they're so close.

I think there would have to be major hardware problems or disadvantages to choose one over the other in the future, and I just don't see that happening.
