Paul, Article...IBM And Intel Team Up For Desktop Alert Product

By Jeff Sweat, InformationWeek

IBM and Intel built on their desktop management relationship Wednesday with the announcement of a jointly developed product that will alert IS managers to machine failures or tampering attempts, even if computers aren't turned on.
The two companies unveiled Alert on LAN, a product that includes both hardware and software that sends out alerts when potential problems with machines arise. For example, if a key server fails to boot up, Alert on LAN will instantly send a message to a management console to warn administrators. "It's better to know about a problem when it happens rather than when someone runs into it trying to use that resource," said Greg Lang, business unit manager for the Intel's network infrastructure operation.

Alert on LAN will also help prevent theft of computers or components such as memory cards, Lang said. If a machine is taken offline or unplugged, an alert pops up on a management console. "[Before the product] there was no other way to know that a machine's no longer there," he said.

Machines with the new capabilities will be able to warn of problems such as voltage spikes even when they are in sleep mode, which was once a management barrier, said Lang. Alert on LAN will work with existing hardware-sensing products to send alerts on anything from overheating to load-balancing requirements.

The product, which follows work done by the two companies with IBM's Wake on LAN technology as part of their Advanced Manageability Alliance, will be a companion piece to Intel's 82558 Fast Ethernet Controller. It will emerge in IBM's PC 300 and Intellistation series in the second quarter, along with an Intel product intended for other PC vendors, who are expected to also roll out Alert on LAN products at that time. The capabilities will be supported in both Intel's LANDesk and IBM's NetFinity products.
