I am not sure about how much currency you can carry out of US. But there is no limitation on amount you carry into US. However, if you carry enough currency into US (10K probably as you said), you have to declare it at custom.

Perhaps the fact that there is no limit to the amount of dollars you can bring into the US (assuming you declare it) is another reason why Koreans are desperate to get US dollars, since they can only bring out $5K in cash and can only spend $20K per year anywhere abroad including credit card charges. Dollars can be converted much easier and in more places than the won.

So, the big problem is how to get the money converted back to dollars once you get the "favorable" rate. For me, my wife has plenty of relatives in Korea who will do it. I presume I could do it myself, but I bet I, too, would have a $20K limit. Well, at least that would more than pay for the trip. (g)
