I walked across the border with no customs agents asking me anything, I was in San Diego on a golf holiday in the 90's. My brother in law and I rented a car but we were told do not drive in Mexico. We drove to the border parked on the American side and walked across. I must say Tijuana was the only place that made me nervous, what a shit hole, we were frisked for weapons to go in a restaurant. I've been in Manila, Bangkok, Singapore and Jakarta walking around and never worried about anything.
